About the Programme

This two-day non-promotional educational programme focuses on contemporary multidisciplinary management of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), bringing together neuromuscular specialists for peer-to-peer exchange, practical case discussion and multidisciplinary learning.

Chaired by Professor Eugenio Mercuri at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, the programme explores the SMA patient journey from newborn screening and genetics through to treated phenotypes, respiratory care, bulbar function, nutrition, rehabilitation, orthopaedics, emergency planning, patient perspectives and emerging therapies.

Programme Chair

Professor Eugenio Mercuri

Professor Eugenio Mercuri is Professor of Paediatric Neurology at the Gemelli Catholic University, Rome. Professor Mercuri is a world-leading expert in neuromuscular disorders, and has played a transformative role in the field of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). He served as a lead investigator for the pivotal trials of all three approved SMA therapies and was instrumental in developing essential motor outcome measures, including the HFMSE and CHOP-INTEND. His work on natural history studies and the MDT approach to SMA care remains the gold standard for clinical research and patient care.
